The Consultation & Advocacy Promotion Service

Individual Advocacy

We have a team of volunteer advocates who work across the two geographical areas of East Lothian and Midlothian. Our service provides advocacy support to service users in the community as well as Rosslynlee Hospital and Herdmanflat Hospital.

We also employ a full-time Individual Advocacy Worker whose main function is to work with service users who may be directly affected by the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003, in particular people attending hearings of the new Mental Health Tribunal.

CAPS, in collaboration with AdvoCard, has developed guides for service users in nominating a Named Person and preparing an Advance Statement (see below), as well as other training material on the new legislation. Staff have delivered training to volunteer advocates as well as giving talks to service users and staff from statutory and voluntary sector agencies on independent advocacy, advance statements, named persons and the Tribunal.
